Buzzing with Brilliance: Inside the SJS Middle School Spelling Bee

Saint John School 2026 Middle School Spelling Bee
Our annual middle school Spelling Bee was an exciting event from start to finish! Students from across the middle school stepped up with confidence and focus, taking on words that ranged from tricky favorites to truly challenging vocabulary. It was a wonderful showcase of preparation, courage, and a genuine love of language.
As the rounds progressed, the intensity in the room grew. Early rounds tested pronunciation and rhythm, while later rounds demanded sharp focus and steady nerves. The audience listened closely as students confidently spelled words like archipelago, silhouette, misanthrope, and apocalypse.
By Round 4, the competition had narrowed to eight spellers—two from each grade level—highlighting the strong representation from sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. From there, the Bee only grew more competitive as students relied on their knowledge of word origins, patterns, and careful listening to stay in the game.
By Round 11, just three spellers remained—one from each grade—setting the stage for an exciting finish. A sixth grader and an eighth grader advanced through the final four rounds in a head-to-head showdown, with the eighth grader ultimately emerging as our school champion after an impressive display of focus and perseverance.
Our winning eighth grader will now go on to represent Saint John School at the regional Scripps Spelling Bee competition later next month. We are so proud and wish her the best of luck as she continues this exciting journey.
Congratulations to all of our participants and finalists. Your hard work, bravery, and determination were on full display, and we couldn’t be prouder. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Spelling Bee!
