Setting Sail with 5th Grade: A Day at the Star of India

Our fifth graders embarked on an unforgettable field trip to the Star of India Maritime Museum on San Diego’s beautiful downtown waterfront. As they explored the world’s oldest active sailing ship, students stepped back in time to experience the great age of sail and steam. They even studied historical maps and worked together to chart the best route, putting themselves in the shoes of sailors who once navigated the seas. Through the museum’s award-winning educational programs, they not only relived history but also discovered the fascinating science of the sea. This hands-on learning adventure brought history and science to life, sparking curiosity and wonder while deepening our students’ appreciation for both maritime heritage and the spirit of exploration.
